Yoga Postures >> Vitarka Mudra (Gesture of Teaching and Discussion) Yoga Posture

Why Is It Called Vitarka Mudra?

Vitaraka Mudra, also commonly spelled Vitarka Mudra, is named after the symbolic hand gesture used by Lord Buddha during discussion and teaching. This mudra represents the transmission of wisdom, knowledge, and intellectual clarity. Practicing Vitaraka Mudra helps cultivate true understanding, reasoning power, and righteous wisdom.

How to Perform Vitarka Mudra

  1. Sit comfortably on the floor or yoga mat in any meditative posture (Dhyanatmakasana) such as Padmasana or Sukhasana.

  2. Close your eyes and bring awareness to your natural inhalation and exhalation, allowing the breath to become slow, deep, and steady.

  3. Rest both hands gently on the knees with the palms relaxed.

  4. Raise the right hand to chest level, palm facing forward, initially in Abhaya Mudra.

  5. Slowly curl the index finger and touch its tip to the thumb, forming a complete circle.

  6. Keep the remaining fingers extended naturally.

  7. Maintain focus on the hand gesture with closed eyes and observe the subtle energy and vibrations created during the practice.

  8. Continue breathing deeply and calmly throughout the session.
