Why Is It Called Vayu Mudra?
Vayu Mudra is named after Vayu, the air element (Vata Tatva) in the body according to yogic and Ayurvedic principles. This powerful hand gesture helps balance and pacify excess Vata (air element), thereby regulating its functions in the body. It is especially beneficial for conditions caused by excess air element, such as joint pain, tremors, gas, restlessness, and nervous disorders.
How to Perform Vayu Mudra (Step-by-Step Guide)
- Sit comfortably on the floor, yoga mat, or a chair.
- Choose a meditation posture such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose).
- Keep your spine straight and shoulders relaxed.
- Take a few deep breaths to normalize your breathing pattern.
- Place both hands on your knees with palms facing upward.
- Bend the index finger and touch its tip to the base of the thumb.
- Gently press the index finger with the thumb (apply light pressure).
- Keep the remaining three fingers extended comfortably.
- Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.
- You may softly chant "Om" while breathing deeply and calmly.
