Why is it called Vajroli Mudra?
The term Vajroli Mudra is derived from the Sanskrit word "Vajra", which means thunderbolt, symbolizing hardness, intensity, strength, and control. This powerful yogic mudra represents mastery over vital and reproductive energy and is practiced to enhance pelvic strength, discipline, and vitality.
How to Perform Vajroli Mudra
Vajroli Mudra is an advanced Hatha Yoga practice and should be performed with awareness and proper breathing.
- Sit comfortably on the floor in any meditative posture (Dhyanatmakasana) such as Padmasana or Sukhasana.
- Keep the spine erect and relax the entire body.
- Bring awareness to your breath and practice slow, deep, and rhythmic inhalation and exhalation.
- Place both hands on the knees or thighs in Gyana Mudra, with palms facing upward.
First Stage:
- Focus your awareness on the pelvic muscles near the genital region.
- With exhalation, gently contract and lift the pelvic muscles upward.
- Hold the breath outside the body (Bahya Kumbhaka) for a few seconds.
- Slowly release the contraction and relax.
Second Stage:
- Take a slow, deep inhalation followed by exhalation.
- Perform Uddiyana Bandha, then apply Jalandhara Bandha.
- Contract the pelvic muscles and gently rotate the energy lock in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions.
- Release the bandhas and return to normal breathing.
Third Stage:
- Assume Naukasana (Boat Pose).
- Repeat the practices of the first and second stages while maintaining breath awareness and control.
Note: For women, Sahajoli Mudra involves similar muscular actions and offers comparable benefits.
