Why is it called Unmani Mudra (Beyond the Mind)?
The term Unmani means beyond the mind, inattentiveness, or a state free from intellectual interference. Unmani Mudra is named so because it helps the practitioner transcend mental fluctuations and enter a state of deep awareness and thoughtless consciousness during meditation.
How to Perform Unmani Mudra
- Sit comfortably on a yoga mat or the floor according to your convenience.
- Adopt any meditative posture (Dhyanatmak Asana) such as Padmasana, Sukhasana, or another comfortable seated pose.
- Bring awareness to your breathing. Inhale and exhale slowly, making the breath deep, calm, and natural.
- Place both hands on the knees or thighs in a relaxed position, with the palms facing upward.
- Form Gyana Mudra with both hands.
- Take a deep inhalation while focusing on the Ajna Chakra (located at the back of the head), and gently open the eyes as wide as possible.
- During exhalation, move your focus downward through the chakras in sequence: Vishuddha, Anahata, Manipura, Swadhisthana, and finally Muladhara Chakra.
- Continue breathing deeply and calmly throughout the practice, maintaining mental stillness.
