Why is it called Uddiyana Bandha?
The term Uddiyana means "upward flying" or "rising", and Bandha means "lock" or "seal". Uddiyana Bandha is named so because it involves lifting the abdominal region upward, helping to direct prana (vital life force) and vayu (energy) toward the upper energy centers. This yogic lock plays a key role in activating and channeling internal energy.
How to Perform Uddiyana Bandha
- Begin in a standing position with your feet slightly apart.
- Gently bend your knees and lean forward comfortably.
- Lower your head toward your chest and place both hands firmly on your knees.
- Take 2-3 deep, calm breaths to relax the body.
- Inhale deeply, then exhale completely and forcefully.
- After exhalation, draw the abdominal muscles inward and upward toward the spine and diaphragm without inhaling.
- Hold the position for a few seconds according to your comfort.
- Slowly release the lock, inhale deeply, and return to a relaxed posture such as Sukhasana.
Note: Throughout the practice, maintain slow, deep, and controlled breathing. Beginners may start with false inhalation (abdominal vacuum without air intake) for better control and safety.
