Why is it called Surya Mudra?
Surya Mudra is named after Surya, the Hindu Sun God who symbolizes energy, light, vitality, stamina, and heat. This powerful yoga hand gesture is also known as Agni Mudra, Agnivardhak Mudra, and Weight Loss Mudra. It is believed to increase the fire element (Agni) in the body and balance Kapha dosha.
How to Perform Surya Mudra (Step-by-Step Guide)
- Sit comfortably on the floor, yoga mat, or a chair as per your convenience.
- Choose any meditation posture, such as Padmasana or Sukhasana.
- Keep your spine straight and relax your shoulders. Close your eyes and take slow, deep breaths to normalize your breathing pattern.
- Place both hands on your knees with palms facing upward.
- Bend the ring finger and place its tip at the base of the thumb. Gently press the ring finger with the thumb without applying excessive pressure. Keep the remaining three fingers comfortably extended and relaxed.
- Focus on your breathing and concentrate on the mudra.
- Practice deep and calm breathing throughout the session.
