Why is it called Surabhi Mudra?
Surabhi Mudra is also known as Kamadhenu Mudra or Dhenu Mudra. The word Surabhi refers to the divine wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu in Hindu mythology. Kamadhenu is believed to grant wishes and provide abundance.
Because of this symbolism, Surabhi Mudra is often associated with fulfilling desires, prosperity, and balance in life. Practicing this mudra is believed to help harmonize the body's energies and support the realization of positive goals and aspirations.
How to Perform Surabhi Mudra (Step-by-Step Guide)
- Sit comfortably on the floor, yoga mat, or a chair according to your convenience.
- Adopt a comfortable meditation posture such as Padmasana, Dhyanatmakasana or Sukhasana.
- Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Allow your breathing to become slow, calm, and natural.
- Bring both hands near your chest in the Namaste or Namaskar gesture.
- Now interlock your fingers in the following way:
- Touch the left ring finger with the right little finger.
- Touch the right ring finger with the left little finger.
- Touch the right middle finger with the left index finger.
- Touch the left middle finger with the right index finger.
- Keep both thumbs separate and pointing toward the heart without touching each other.
- Close your eyes and focus on the mudra. Feel the natural flow of energy and vibrations in your hands.
- Continue breathing slowly and deeply throughout the practice.

Variations of Surabhi Mudra
Different variations of Surabhi Mudra are practiced to balance specific elements in the body:
Vayu Surabhi Mudra - Touch the thumb to the base of the index finger.
Prithvi Surabhi Mudra - Touch the thumb to the base of the middle finger.
Shunya Surabhi Mudra - Touch the thumb to the base of the ring finger.
Jala Surabhi Mudra - Touch the thumb to the base of the little finger.
Each variation is believed to influence one of the five elements (Pancha Mahabhuta) in the body.
