Why is it called Shanmukhi Mudra?
Sanmukhi Mudra is derived from two Sanskrit words, "Shan" meaning six and "Mukhi" meaning openings. This yogic gesture symbolizes the closing of the six sensory gateways of the body to withdraw the mind from external distractions. By gently closing the ears, eyes, nostrils, and mouth, Sanmukhi Mudra helps turn awareness inward and enhances mental focus.
How to Perform Shanmukhi Mudra
- Sit comfortably on a yoga mat or chair in a meditative posture such as Padmasana or Sukhasana.
- Keep the spine erect and relax the shoulders.
- Raise both hands in front of the face.
- Close the ears with the thumbs.
- Place the index fingers near the eyebrows.
- Gently rest the middle fingers on the closed eyelids.
- Use the ring fingers and little fingers to partially close the nostrils and lightly touch the lips.
- Inhale slowly through the partially closed nostrils.
- Exhale gently while focusing on the Ajna Chakra (third eye).
- Continue slow, deep breathing for a few rounds, then release the hands and resume normal breathing.
