Yoga Postures >> Shankha Mudra (Conch Shell Gesture) Yoga Posture

Why is it called Shankha Mudra?

Shankha Mudra is derived from the Sanskrit word "Shankha", which means conch shell. When this yoga hand gesture is performed correctly, the final hand position resembles the shape of a conch shell. In yogic tradition, the conch symbolizes purity, positive vibrations, and divine sound energy.

How to Perform Shankha Mudra (Step-by-Step Guide)

  1. Sit comfortably on the floor, a yoga mat, or a chair, according to your convenience.

  2. Assume any meditative posture, such as Padmasana or Sukhasana.

  3. Keep your spine straight and shoulders relaxed.

  4. Close your eyes and take a few deep inhalations and exhalations to normalize your breathing pattern.

  5. Bring both hands in front of your chest, near the sternum (breastbone).

  6. Wrap the fingers of your right hand around your left thumb.

  7. Extend the right thumb upward so that it touches and aligns with the left middle finger.

  8. Keep the remaining fingers of the left hand straight and close together, forming a conch-like shape.

  9. Focus on the Vishuddha Chakra (Throat Chakra) with closed eyes.

  10. Feel the subtle vibrations and chant "Om" softly during exhalation.

  11. Practice for a few minutes, then repeat the mudra on the opposite side.

  12. Maintain slow, deep, and calm breathing throughout the session.
