Why is it called Shambhavi Mudra?
Shambhavi Mudra, also known as Bhrumadhya Mudra, is a powerful yogic eye gesture in which the eyes remain half-open and gently gaze toward the eyebrow center (Ajna Chakra). In this mudra, both eyes focus on the midline, making it popularly known as the Eyebrow Center Gazing Gesture or Third Eye Gaze. The practice is associated with heightened awareness, mental clarity, and inner balance.
How to Perform Shambhavi Mudra
- Sit comfortably on the floor or a chair, depending on your convenience.
- Choose any comfortable meditative posture (Dhyanatmak Asana) such as Padmasana, Sukhasana, or a relaxed seated pose.
- Close your eyes briefly and become aware of your breath. Practice slow, deep, and natural inhalation and exhalation.
- Gently open your eyes halfway and bring both eyeballs together, focusing on the midline, base of the nose, or the Ajna Chakra.
- Maintain this gaze steadily without strain.
- Continue watching until mild lacrimation (watering of the eyes) begins in one or both eyes.
- Throughout the practice, keep your breathing calm, deep, and relaxed.
