Yoga Postures >> Pushan Mudra (Gesture of Nourishment) Yoga Posture
|
Why is it called Pushan Mudra?
The word Pushan literally means "nourishment". Pushan Mudra is named for its ability to nourish both the body and the mind. This yoga hand gesture is traditionally practised to support healthy digestion, improve energy balance, and promote overall physical and mental well-being.
How to Perform Pushan Mudra
- Sit comfortably on the floor, a yoga mat, or a chair, depending on your comfort.
- Choose a comfortable meditation posture, such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose).
- Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths to relax your body and mind. Maintain a calm and steady breathing pattern throughout the practice.
- Rest both hands comfortably on your thighs or knees with the palms facing upward.
Right Hand (Vyana Mudra):
- Join the tip of the thumb with the tips of the middle and ring fingers. Keep the index and little fingers comfortably extended.
Left Hand (Apana Mudra):
- Join the tip of the thumb with the tips of the ring and little fingers. Keep the index and middle fingers comfortably extended.
- Gently focus your attention on your hands with your eyes closed and observe the natural flow of energy during the practice.
- Continue breathing slowly and deeply throughout the session.

Benefits of Pushan Mudra
Supports the body's natural detox pathways while naturally kicking your metabolic rate into gear.
Enhances gut health, ensuring your body efficiently breaks down food and absorbs essential nutrients.
Acts as a powerful natural remedy to soothe acid reflux, bloating, and chronic stomach discomfort.
Promotes better sleep and stress relief by balancing the body’s vital energies—specifically stabilizing the Prana, Vyana, and Apana Vayu (Ayurvedic sub-doshas that regulate the nervous system and elimination).
