Yoga Postures >> Prithvi Mudra (Gesture of the Earth) Yoga Posture

Why is it called Prithvi Mudra?

Prithvi Mudra, also known as the Earth Mudra, is named after the Sanskrit word Prithvi, which means earth. This yoga hand gesture is believed to balance the Earth element (Prithvi Tattva) in the body, promoting stability, strength, vitality, and overall physical well-being. It helps restore balance in the body's natural functions by enhancing the qualities associated with the Earth element.

How to Perform Prithvi Mudra

  1. Sit comfortably on the floor, on a yoga mat, or on a chair, according to your convenience.

  2. Assume any comfortable meditation posture, such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose), Sukhasana (Easy Pose), or any other seated position that allows you to keep your spine straight.

  3. Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths to relax your body and calm your mind.

  4. Rest both hands gently on your knees or thighs with your palms facing upward.

  5. Touch the tip of your ring finger to the tip of your thumb, while keeping the remaining three fingers comfortably extended.

  6. Maintain this hand gesture with both hands and breathe slowly and naturally throughout the practice.

  7. Focus your attention on your breath or on the subtle sensations and energy in your hands while remaining relaxed.
