Why is it called Padma Mudra?
The Sanskrit word "Padma" means "lotus". Padma Mudra (Lotus Mudra) is named after the fully blossomed lotus flower, which symbolizes purity, inner beauty, compassion, strength, and spiritual awakening. Just as a lotus blooms beautifully even in muddy water, this yoga hand gesture represents the ability to remain calm, positive, and emotionally balanced even during life's most challenging situations.
How to Perform Padma Mudra
- Sit comfortably on the floor, a yoga mat, or a chair as per your comfort.
- Sit in a comfortable meditation posture, such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose).
- Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths to relax your body and calm your mind.
- Bring both hands to the centre of your chest at the level of the heart (Anahata Chakra).
- Join your palms together in Anjali Mudra (Prayer Pose).
- Keeping the thumbs and little fingers connected, slowly open the index, middle, and ring fingers outward to form the shape of a fully blossomed lotus flower.
- Focus your attention on the Anahata (Heart) Chakra and observe the natural flow of breath and energy.
- Continue breathing deeply and calmly throughout the practice.
