Yoga Postures >> Moola Bandha (Root Lock) Yoga Posture

Why is it called Moola Bandha (Root Lock)?

Moola Bandha is known as the Root Lock because it activates and stimulates the Mooladhara Chakra, the root energy center located at the base of the spine. Regular practice of Moola Bandha helps awaken dormant energy, stabilize prana, and support physical, mental, and energetic balance.

How to Perform Moola Bandha

  1. Sit comfortably on a yoga mat or floor in a meditative posture such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose) or Sukhasana (Easy Pose).

  2. Keep the spine erect and place both heels close to the perineum (the area between the anal and urinary openings).

  3. Inhale deeply and gently contract the muscles of the perineum, drawing them upward toward the spine. Hold briefly, then exhale slowly.

  4. Inhale again, slightly relax the lower perineal muscles, then lift and contract them upward while exhaling.

  5. In the final stage, contract the perineal muscles firmly while holding the breath, similar to the sensation of controlling urination.

  6. Throughout the practice, maintain slow, deep, and relaxed breathing.
