Why is it called Merudanda Mudra?
Merudanda Mudra is named after the Sanskrit words "Meru", meaning the spinal column, and "Danda", meaning staff or column. This yoga hand gesture is traditionally practised to support spinal health, improve energy flow along the spine, and promote overall physical and mental well-being.
How to Perform Merudanda Mudra
- Sit comfortably on the floor, a yoga mat, or a chair, depending on your comfort.
- Choose a comfortable meditation posture such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose), Sukhasana (Easy Pose), or any other meditative sitting position.
- Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths to relax your body and calm your mind. Allow your breathing to become steady and natural.
- Rest both hands on your thighs or knees, with your palms facing downward.
- Curl your fingers inward to form loose fists, keeping your thumbs extended and pointing toward each other. Take a few gentle breaths in this position.
- Slowly rotate your wrists so that your palms face upward while your thumbs point forward.
- Keep your eyes closed and gently focus on your hands. Observe the natural sensations, vibrations, and flow of energy throughout your body.
- Continue breathing slowly, deeply, and calmly throughout the practice.
