How to do Matsyendrasana (Lord of the Fishes Pose)

Matsyendrasana, also known as the Lord of the Fishes Pose, is a classic seated spinal twist in yoga that helps improve digestion, spinal flexibility, and overall body balance. Regular practice of this asana stimulates metabolism, tones the abdominal region, and enhances concentration, making it beneficial for both physical and mental well-being.

Step-by-Step Guide to Perform Matsyendrasana

  1. Sit comfortably in Dandasana (Staff Pose) with legs extended and spine erect.

  2. Inhale deeply, bend the right leg, and place the right foot beside the left knee.

  3. Gently place the left hand near the bent right leg, touching the floor or resting on the right thigh.

  4. Slowly bend the left leg, bringing it under the right hip.

  5. Twist the torso to the right, placing the right hand behind the body for support.

  6. Turn the head to look over the right shoulder while keeping the spine straight.

  7. Hold the pose for a few deep breaths.

  8. Exhale and gently release the posture in the reverse order.

  9. Return to Dandasana and relax.

  10. Repeat on the opposite side. Practice 3 to 4 rounds on each side, gradually increasing the holding time.
