Why is it called Mahashirsha Mudra?
Mahashirsha means "Great Head", and Mahashirsha Mudra is commonly known as the Gesture of the Great Head. It is traditionally practised to help relieve headaches, migraines, sinus congestion, and mental tension, which is why it is associated with the head.
How to Perform Mahashirsha Mudra
- Sit comfortably on the floor, a yoga mat, or a chair, whichever is most convenient.
- Assume a comfortable meditation posture such as Padmasana, Sukhasana, or any other seated meditative pose.
- Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths to relax your body and mind. Allow your breathing to become calm and natural.
- Rest both hands on your thighs or knees with the palms facing upward.
- Touch the tips of the thumb, index finger, and middle finger together.
- Fold the ring finger so that its fingertip rests in the centre of the palm.
- Keep the little finger comfortably extended.
- Focus your attention on your hands with your eyes closed and observe the natural flow of energy and vibrations.
- Continue breathing slowly and deeply throughout the practice.
