Why is it called Maha Bandha?
The term Maha means great, enormous, or supreme. Maha Bandha is known as the Great Yogic Lock because it involves the simultaneous application of all three major yogic locks: Jalandhara Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha, and Mula Bandha. When practiced together, these bandhas seal and direct vital energy (prana) throughout the body, making it one of the most powerful yogic techniques.
How to Perform Maha Bandha
- Sit comfortably on a yoga mat or floor.
- Adopt any meditative posture (Dhyanatmakasana) such as Padmasana or Siddhasana.
- Begin with slow, deep breathing to prepare the body and mind.
- Slowly engage the Jalandhar Bandha, followed by Uddiyana Bandha, and then Mooladhara Bandha in this sequence.
- Hold the locks comfortably for a few calm breaths.
- Release the bandhas slowly in reverse order, first Mula Bandha, then Uddiyana Bandha, and finally Jalandhara Bandha.
- Inhale deeply and relax the body.
- Continue breathing deeply, slowly, and calmly throughout the practice.
