Yoga Postures >> Linga Mudra (Gesture of Heat) Yoga Posture

Why is it called Linga Mudra?

Linga Mudra is named after the Linga, a sacred symbol associated with Lord Shiva, the Lord of Creation and Transformation. The mudra resembles the shape of the Shiva Linga and is traditionally practised to generate inner heat, vitality, strength, and positive energy. Therefore, it is also known as the Gesture of Heat.

How to Perform Linga Mudra

  1. Sit comfortably on the floor, a yoga mat, or a chair with your spine straight.

  2. Assume a comfortable meditation posture such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose), Sukhasana (Easy Pose), or any other seated position.

  3. Relax your body and take a few slow, deep breaths to establish a calm and steady breathing pattern.

  4. Bring both hands in front of the navel (umbilical region) with your elbows comfortably bent.

  5. Interlock the fingers of both hands firmly.

  6. Keep the right thumb upright, while wrapping the left thumb and left index finger around the base of the right thumb.

  7. Close your eyes and gently focus your attention on your hands. Observe the natural flow of energy and vibrations within the body.

  8. Maintain slow, deep, and relaxed breathing throughout the practice.

Benefits of Linga Mudra

  • Helps improve self-confidence, courage, and inner strength.

  • Supports the immune system, helping the body fight infections naturally.

  • Promotes creativity, imagination, and artistic expression.

  • Generates internal warmth, making it beneficial during cold weather and for people with a sluggish metabolism.

  • Helps increase vitality and overall energy levels.

  • Precautions

  • People suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension), dyspepsia (indigestion), or those recovering from stroke should practise Linga Mudra only under the guidance of a qualified yoga expert or avoid it unless advised otherwise.

  • Since Linga Mudra generates heat in the body, avoid practising it for prolonged periods, especially during hot weather.

  • During the practice, avoid consuming heavy, oily, dairy-based, and non-vegetarian foods, as these may reduce its effectiveness.

  • Stay well hydrated while practising this mudra regularly.
