Yoga Postures >> Garuda Mudra (Eagle Gesture) Yoga Posture

Why is it called Garuda Mudra?

Garuda Mudra is named after Garuda, the divine eagle-like bird in Hindu and yogic tradition. The eagle symbolizes freedom, strength, courage, and liberation. Garuda Mudra is traditionally practiced to promote a sense of freedom and balance Vata dosha.

How to Perform Garuda Mudra

  1. Sit comfortably on the floor, yoga mat, or chair, according to your convenience.

  2. Begin in a comfortable meditation posture, such as Padmasana (Lotus Pose), Sukhasana (Easy Pose), or Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose), while keeping your spine comfortably upright.

  3. Take a few slow, deep breaths. Inhale and exhale naturally while allowing your breathing pattern to become calm and steady.

  4. Bring both hands toward your thighs and keep your arms relaxed.

  5. Bring both hands together and overlap them inwardly. Interlock or position the thumbs so that they touch each other comfortably at the knuckles, following the traditional hand position of Garuda Mudra.

  6. Close your eyes and gently focus your attention on your hands. Observe your natural breathing and become aware of the sensations and energy flow in the body.

  7. Continue breathing deeply and calmly throughout the practice. Avoid straining your hands or fingers.
