Why is it called Ashvini Mudra?
Ashvini Mudra derives its name from the Sanskrit word “Ashva,” meaning horse. This yogic practice is named after the natural rhythmic contraction of the anal muscles observed in horses. The mudra focuses on repeated contraction and relaxation of the anal sphincter, which helps strengthen the pelvic and rectal muscles.
How to Perform Ashvini Mudra
- Sit comfortably on a yoga mat or the floor in a relaxed position.
- Adopt any meditative posture (Dhyanatmak Asana) such as Padmasana, Sukhasana, or Siddhasana.
- Close your eyes and bring awareness to your breath. Maintain a slow, deep, and natural breathing pattern.
- Place both hands gently on the knees or thighs, palms facing upward, in a relaxed position.
- Take a deep inhalation and slowly contract and lift the anal sphincter muscles, holding the contraction for about 5 seconds.
- During the contraction, gently touch the tongue to the upper palate.
- Exhale and relax the muscles completely.
- Repeat the practice for a few rounds.
Ashvini Mudra can also be practiced in Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) for advanced practitioners.
