Why is it called Adi Mudra?

Adi Mudra is derived from the Sanskrit words "Adi", meaning first, original, or primordial, and "Mudra", meaning gesture or hand seal. Because of this meaning, Adi Mudra is often referred to as the Primordial Gesture in yoga.

This yogic hand gesture is traditionally practiced in meditation and pranayama to promote calmness, balanced breathing, and inner awareness.

How to Perform Adi Mudra (Step-by-Step Guide)

  1. Sit comfortably on the floor, yoga mat, or a chair, keeping your spine straight.

  2. Relax your body and become aware of your natural breathing. Slowly inhale and exhale until your breath becomes calm and steady.

  3. Bring both hands near the abdomen.

  4. Gently fold your thumb inside the palm and close the fingers over it to form a soft fist.

  5. Place your hands on your thighs with palms facing downward.

  6. Close your eyes and focus your attention on the navel (umbilicus) area.

  7. Breathe deep, slow, and calm throughout the practice while observing the natural flow of energy in the body.
