How to Use Star Anise in the Kitchen

  • Recipes:

    Star Anise-Soya Curry:
    Ingredients:
    Star anise 1
    Soya chunks (soaked in buttermilk) 1 cup
    Cauliflower (chopped) 1 cup
    Turmeric ½ t.spoon
    Chilli powder 1 t.spoon
    Oil 2 t.spoon
    Curry leaves 1 t.spoon
    Mustard seeds ½ t.spoon
    Cumin seeds ½ t.spoon
    asafoetida ½ t.spoon
    Ginger (grated) 1 t.spoon
    Buttermilk 2 cup
    Salt As per taste
    Coriander leaves 2 t.spoon
    Recipe:
  • Heat a heavy-bottom pan and add oil.
  • Add mustard seeds; once they splutter, add cumin seeds, star anise, asafoetida, turmeric, and ginger. Saute well.
  • Add curry leaves and cauliflower, then saute for a few minutes.
  • Add soya chunks and mix well. Pour in buttermilk, cover with a lid, and let it cook.
  • If needed, add water and continue cooking until the soya chunks become soft.
  • Once the curry reaches a semi-solid consistency, add chilli powder and coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot, and with chapatti or brown rice.
  • Star anise helps in better digestion and is a perfect healthy lunch option. It keeps you full and prevents unhealthy cravings.


  • Oats-Star Anise Ball:
    Ingredients:
    Star anise powder 1 t.spoon
    Oats (soaked in milk) 1 cup
    Milk 1 cup
    Jaggery 1 cup
    Ghee 3-4 t.spoon
    Water For steaming
    Sesame seeds 2 t.spoon
    Black pepper powder ½ cup
    Recipe:
  • Squeeze out the excess water from the soaked oats.
  • Mix in 1/4 cup of jaggery, 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds, anise powder, and pepper powder. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes.
  • Grease your hands with ghee and shape the mixture into small balls.
  • Prepare a steamer, place the balls inside, and steam until they become soft. Then, roast them in 2 teaspoons of ghee for 2 minutes.
  • In a pan, heat ghee and add sesame seeds, cook until they begin to splutter.
  • Pour in the milk and jaggery, and cook until the mixture reaches a thick consistency.
  • Serve the oats balls.
  • This is a healthy and nourishing recipe, ideal for elderly individuals recovering from weakness and for overall rejuvenation. It also makes a great option for a wholesome breakfast.


  • Star Anise-Basil Herbal Tea:
    Ingredients:
    Star anise
    Basil leaves 1 t.spoon
    Raisins (soaked) 10-12
    Dates Soaked dates
    Salt As per taste
    Water 2 cup
    Recipe:
  • Take raisins and dates in a mixer jar and blend them into a smooth paste. Strain the mixture to remove any excess fibers.
  • In a heavy-bottomed pan, add water, the prepared paste, basil leaves, anise, and a pinch of salt.
  • Cook for 10-15 minutes, adding more water if required.
  • Serve hot.
  • This is a nutritious and energizing drink, especially beneficial during winter for children, elders, and young individuals. It also serves as a healthier alternative for afternoon or evening cravings in an obesity-friendly diet.
