What is low weight in children?

If the baby weighs less than 2.5kg, it may be described as very or extremely low birth weight. It can happen to babies who are born prematurely. If the baby was premature, the situation is different from babies who are small but are born between 37 weeks and 42 weeks (full-term).

Causes of low weight in children

There are many reasons for a baby with low birth weight. Parents who are shorter and weigh less than the average, or who were themselves small at birth, may have smaller children. Some of the other causes are listed below.

  • If the baby was born prematurely and didn't have enough time to grow.

  • If the baby has an inherited medical condition.

  • If the mother have high blood pressure during pregnancy, it can also affect the flow of blood through the placenta to the baby.


  • Symptoms of low weight in children

  • Frequent and inexplicable fatigue.

  • General malaise and a decline in stamina.

  • Lowered resistance.


  • How low weight affect the baby?

  • An increased risk of infection.

  • Breathing problems, called respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).

  • Too many red blood cells, which can make baby's blood too thick (polycythaemia).

  • Difficulty with keeping warm.


  • Home remedies for weight gain in children

  • Take aswagandha powder, black sesame and date, grind this mixture, then roast in ghee, make biscuits or bar from the mixture, give it to the children in everyday meal.

  • Weight gaining ghee preparation – make a paste from 10 gm of ashwagandha powder in water, add 160 ml cow-milk and 40 ml cow-ghee, heat on medium flame till the mixture become dry and separate from the ghee. It is taken twice a day with the milk.

  • Take a poppy seed, roast in ghee, add jaggery and water, and cook until the semiliquid consistency. This preparation can be added to the diet once a week.

  • Take powder of sago, sugar, and milk, boil it until the mixture thickens, give it to the babies twice a week.

  • Take amla powder and sugar, roast it into cow ghee, make a semi solid mixture, give it to the children in everyday meal.

  • For under weight children, if loss of appetite is the main reason for not gaining weight, then first treat that. Bal-chaturbhadra churna and syrup are best for the overall problem.

  • For under weight babies who have a normal or excess appetite, they should be given colostrum (first milk of the cow after delivery) frequently.

  • Bananas and strawberries are helpful in weight gain in children.

  • Adding butter and cheese to the daily diet of the kid may helpful in increase the weight.


  • Consideration

    Weight gain in some babies is not a issue if the growth and development of children is normal.
