What is Laryngitis?

Laryngitis refers to the inflammation of the voice box (larynx), commonly caused by viral or bacterial infections.

Causes of Laryngitis

  • Overuse or strain of the vocal cords.

  • Viral or bacterial infections.

  • Vocal cord paralysis.

  • Recurrent sore throat, rhinitis, or sinusitis.

  • Excessive shouting or singing.

  • Allergic reactions to chemicals or irritants.

  • Alcohol consumption or smoking addiction.


  • Symptoms of Laryngitis

  • Hoarseness or harshness of voice.

  • Weakened or impaired voice.

  • Difficulty speaking.

  • Accompanied by a sore throat.

  • Dry cough.

  • Rarely, coughing up blood.

  • Fever.


  • Preventive Measures for Laryngitis

  • Avoid yelling or putting strain on the vocal cords.

  • Refrain from consuming very cold or sugary foods.

  • Prevent infections by maintaining hygiene and avoiding contact with infected individuals.

  • Gargle with warm water to soothe the throat.

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol.

  • Stay away from foods or substances that may trigger allergic reactions.

  • Home Remedies for Laryngitis

  • Suck on a 1-inch piece of ginger coated with honey to relieve throat irritation and inflammation.

  • Mix turmeric and a pinch of rock salt in warm water. Gargle twice daily to soothe the throat and improve voice quality.

  • Drinking warm milk with turmeric helps reduce inflammation of the vocal cords.

  • Drinking ginger tea can also help relieve a sore throat and laryngitis.
    • Mix 1 teaspoon of ginger paste with rock salt, black pepper, and basil leaves in 2 cups of water. Boil for 5 minutes, let it cool, then add honey. Strain before drinking. This tea helps ease sore throat and laryngitis symptoms.
  • Sucking on a piece of jaggery can soothe a dry throat and enhance voice clarity.

  • Consume warm lentil or green gram soup as a light and soothing dietary option to reduce throat pain and irritation.

  • Roast 1 teaspoon of cow ghee with 2 teaspoons of ragi or bajra flour until it changes colour. Add sugar, and 1 cup of water and let it cook until the water is absorbed. Mix in ginger powder and ajwain seeds. Consume once daily to relieve vocal cord irritation and inflammation.
