Dysentery: Causes, Symptoms, Home Remedies & Diet Tips for Fast Relief

What is Dysentery?

Dysentery is an inflammatory condition of the colon, characterised by frequent diarrhea often mixed with mucus. It is usually accompanied by sharp abdominal pain and, in some cases, the presence of blood in the stool.

Causes of Dysentery

  • Bacterial infections.

  • Amoebic infection is caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica.

  • Emotional stress and anxiety.

  • Consumption of excessively spicy food.

  • Overindulgence in junk and bakery items.

  • Weakness or abnormalities in abdominal muscles.

  • Chronic inflammatory conditions of the abdomen.

  • Certain medications.


  • Symptoms of Dysentery

  • Increased frequency of bowel movements.

  • Abdominal cramps during defecation.

  • Alternating hard and loose stools.

  • Occasional fatigue.

  • Presence of mucus or blood in stool.


  • Home Remedies for Dysentery

  • Mix roasted cumin seeds (jeera) with honey and consume.

  • Take 1-2 teaspoons of Bael (Aegle marmelos) fruit pulp with water twice daily.

  • Drink buttermilk with a pinch of rock salt, black pepper, and roasted cumin seed powder during breakfast and lunch.

  • Prepare a mixture of powdered dried ginger, cumin seeds, nutmeg, and black pepper (in equal parts). Add 2 teaspoons of psyllium husk (isabgol) and a pinch of rock salt. Take this in the morning with buttermilk and later with lukewarm water.

  • Consume ½ teaspoon of Terminalia chebula (haritaki) powder with lukewarm water at bedtime.

  • Mix powdered dried ginger, black pepper, and long pepper (pippali) and take 1 teaspoon with lukewarm water twice a day.

  • Boil 50g of pomegranate peel in 200 ml of milk until reduced by half. Divide into three parts and consume thrice a day.

  • Eat ripe bananas with buttermilk.

  • Eat a boiled apple with milk.

  • Take fenugreek (methi) seeds with buttermilk.

  • Slice two lemons and boil them in water. Drink the water three times a day.

  • Boil pomegranate leaves in water, strain, and drink.

  • Take 5–10 grams of powdered sponge gourd (turai) seeds with buttermilk twice daily.

  • Mix chopped onion with equal parts tender Ficus religiosa (peepal) leaves, coriander, sugar, and curd. Chew this mixture.


  • Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations

  • Prefer light, cooked meals.

  • Green gram soup and rice gruel are ideal.

  • Avoid junk food, bakery items, and dairy products.

  • Drink buttermilk with cumin powder, coriander powder, and ginger powder.

  • Stay hydrated with regular water; avoid cold water.

  • Address underlying anxiety, stress, or depression if present.
