What is dysentery?

It is an inflammatory disorder of the colon that results in diarrhea or passing of stools with mucus and is usually preceded by gripping abdominal pain. Sometimes blood may also be present in the stools.

Causes of dysentery

  • Bacterial infections.

  • Intestinal amoebiasis is caused by a protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica.

  • Emotional stress.

  • Anxiety.

  • Spicy food habits.

  • Junk and bakery food overindulging.

  • Abdominal muscle weakness or abnormalities.

  • Chronic inflammation diseases of the abdomen.

  • Some medicine also causes dysentery.


  • Symptoms of dysentery

  • The frequency of defecation is increased.

  • Defecation with abdominal cramps.

  • Sometimes hard and sometimes loose motions.

  • Tiredness sometimes.

  • Mucous and blood with the stool.


  • Home Remedies For Dysentery

  • Take roasted Cumin (jeera) with Honey.

  • Bael (Aegle marmelous), 1-2 teaspoons of the pulp of the fruit with water twice a day.

  • Drink buttermilk with a pinch each of rock salt, black pepper, and roasted cumin seed powder twice daily with breakfast and lunch.

  • Mix one teaspoon of a powdered preparation of dried ginger (adrak), cumin seeds, nutmeg (jayaphal), and black pepper in equal quantities. Add two teaspoons of psyllium husk (isabgol) and a pinch of rock salt. Eat this once in the morning with buttermilk, and again later in the day with lukewarm water.

  • Consume half teaspoon powder of Terminalia chebula (haritaki) with lukewarm water at bedtime.

  • Eat one teaspoon powdered mixture of dried ginger root, black pepper (kali mirch), and long pepper (pippali) with lukewarm water twice a day.

  • Boil 50 grams of pomegranate rind (anaar ka chilka) in 200 ml of milk and concentrate to less than half the quantity. Divide it into three equal parts and drink it three times a day.

  • Eat ripe Banana (Kela) with buttermilk.

  • Eat a boiled apple with milk.

  • Take Fenugreek (Methi) seeds with buttermilk.

  • Take two lemons (nimbu) and slice them. Add them to water and boil for few minutes. Consume it thrice a day.

  • Boil pomegranate (anaar) leaves in water filter it and consume.

  • Consume 5 to 10 grams of powdered Sponge Gourd (turai) seeds with buttermilk twice a day.

  • Mix onion (pyaz) pieces with equal parts of tender leaves of Ficus religiosa (peepal), Coriander (dhaniya), sugar, and curd and chew this mixture.


  • Diet and regime For Dysentery

  • Light and cooked food is preferable.

  • Green gram soup, rice gruel is the best option.

  • Avoid junk, bakery, and dairy products.

  • Take buttermilk with jeera powder, dhaniya powder, and ginger powder.

  • Take normal water the whole day, avoid cold water.

  • Treat the anxiety, stress, and depression in such cases.
