What is Asthma?


Asthma is a condition in which the airways of the lungs become either narrowed or completely blocked, impeding normal breathing. However, in asthma, this obstruction of the lungs is reversible, either spontaneously or with medication. Although cough and asthma are two different things, yet people with asthma usually have difficulty in breathing and often cough a lot. In fact, a persistent cough could be a sign of asthma. It is characterized by constriction and inflammation of the air passages.

Symptoms of Asthma



  • Wheezing

  • Breathlessness

  • Recurrent Coughing

  • Chest tightness

  • Mucus production

  • Fatigue

  • Difficulty in speaking


  • Home Remedies For Asthma

  • Cut Ginger into small pieces and add them to boiling water. Leave it steep for 5 minutes. Allow it to cool and drink it.

  • Eating raw onions helps to clear air passageways for better breathing and gives relief from Asthma.

  • Eat Fig (Anjeer) in the morning with a pinch of long Pepper (piplamul, Lindi pipper, piplamool) powder.

  • Take pills made of Jaggery (Gud) and Camphor (Kapur).

  • Mix equal powder of long Pepper (piplamul, Lindi Pipper, piplamool), Amla, and dried Ginger(sonth). Take 2-3gm of this powder with Honey (shahad) and Sugar twice or thrice a day.

  • Take mustard oil and heat with Camphor. Gently massage it on the chest and upper back. Repeat it several times a day to decrease the symptoms.

  • Take a hot sesame oil with rock salt applied to the thorax region, then do the fomentation of salt (heat the salt on the pan, add the salt on the cloth, make a pocket of it).

  • Heat the pan, add the salt and turmeric to it, take a smoke of it also expulse the cough and clear the airways.

  • Make a stick with turmeric, sugar powder, guggul, and black pepper powder, dried out in sunlight. Then light up the stick from one side, and take smoke from the other side of the stick in the nostril, and exhale from the mouth. This remedy is useful in emergency conditions of asthmatic attacks.

  • Hot water sip also helps in an asthmatic attack.

  • Asthma is also triggered by acid reflux of the stomach, so be careful with the diet which causes dyspepsia or stomach disturbance.

  • Avoid taking curd, buttermilk, Bringle, tomato, ladies finger, or other allergic food as it increases inflammation of the air passages.
