A gum disease, mostly an infection of gums and can destroy the jawbone. Periodontitis also called gum disease that damages the soft tissue and if not treated, can destroy the bone that supports your teeth.

Following are the types of gum disease

1. Gingivitis.

2. Aggressive periodontitis.

3. Chronic periodontitis.

4. Necrotizing periodontal disease.

5. Tooth loss.

Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease.

Symptoms of gum diseases are

  • Toothache.

  • Persistent bad breath.

  • Redness of gums.

  • Receding gums.

  • Swelling in the gums.

  • Tenderness in gums.

  • Gums that bleed, usually during or after tooth brushing.

  • Formation of deep pockets between gums and teeth.

  • Pus between gums and teeth.

  • Painful chewing.

  • Tooth loss or loose, shifting teeth.


  • Only a dentist or a periodontist can recognize the progression of gum disease. Sometimes gum disease may affect only certain teeth, such as molars.

    Have a look at common causes of it

  • Plaque, a sticky film composed of bacteria mainly, causes the development of periodontitis and gingivitis.

  • Sugars and starches in food interact with bacteria and interfere with the existing gingivitis.

  • Also, plaque can harden under your gumline into calculus.

  • Smoking.

  • Nutritional deficiencies.

  • Hormonal shifts.

  • Crooked teeth.

  • Family history.


  • Gingivitis usually happens before periodontitis, not all gingivitis leads to periodontitis, you can prevent or reverse it by following these preventive measures

  • Brush your teeth twice a day.

  • Floss every day.

  • Avoid tobacco products.

  • It is better to use an electric toothbrush to maximize your cleaning potential.

  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months.

  • Use a mouthwash.

  • Limit your sugar intake.

  • Do not chew sugary chewing gums.

  • Professionally cleaning the pockets around teeth.

  • Visit your dentist every 6 months.
