Gum disease, primarily an infection of the gums, can lead to jawbone damage. Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, affects the soft tissue and, if left untreated, can destroy the bone that supports your teeth.

Types of Gum Disease:

1. Gingivitis - The mildest form of gum disease.

2. Aggressive periodontitis - Rapidly progressing gum disease that affects otherwise healthy individuals.

3. Chronic periodontitis - The most common form, characterized by inflammation and slow deterioration of the gums and bone.

4. Necrotizing periodontal disease - A severe condition that leads to tissue death in the gums, ligaments, and bone.

5. Tooth loss - A potential consequence of advanced gum disease.

Symptoms of Gum Disease:

  • Toothache.

  • Persistent bad breath.

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums

  • Receding gums.

  • Bleeding gums, especially during or after brushing

  • Deep pockets between the gums and teeth.

  • Pus formation between the gums and teeth.

  • Painful chewing.

  • Loose or shifting teeth.

  • Only a dentist or periodontist can accurately assess the progression of gum disease. In some cases, the disease may affect only specific teeth, such as the molars.

    Causes of Gum Disease:

  • Plaque buildup - A sticky film of bacteria that causes gingivitis and periodontitis.

  • Sugars and starches in food, interact with bacteria and worsen gingivitis.

  • Hardened plaque (calculus) beneath the gumline.

  • Smoking weakens gum tissue and reduces healing.

  • Nutritional deficiencies, especially vitamin C deficiency.

  • Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy or menopause.

  • Crooked teeth, making it harder to clean properly.

  • Family history, which may increase susceptibility.

  • Prevention of Gum Disease:

Gingivitis often precedes periodontitis, but not all cases of gingivitis lead to severe gum disease. You can prevent or even reverse it by following these measures:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day.

  • Floss every day.

  • Avoid tobacco products.

  • Use an electric toothbrush for more effective cleaning.

  • Replace your toothbrush every three months to maintain efficiency.

  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce plaque buildup.

  • Limit your sugar intake.

  • Avoid sugary chewing gum.

  • Get professional dental cleanings to remove tartar.

  • Visit your dentist every six months for routine checkups.

  • Tips for Managing Gum Health:

  • Brush after meals to eliminate food debris and bacteria.

  • Use a natural mouthwash, such as one containing tea tree oil or aloe vera.

  • Consume vitamin C-rich foods, such as citrus fruits and bell peppers, to support gum health.

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene is the key to preventing and managing gum disease. Regular dental checkups, a balanced diet, and proper oral care can help keep your gums and teeth healthy.
