What is Flatulence?

Flatulence, or farting, occurs when gas builds up in the digestive system, often causing abdominal discomfort. Most people pass gas unconsciously, and if it's odorless, it's usually healthy. However, when gas contains sulfur due to undigested food, it can have a foul smell.

How Does Flatulence Happen?

Whenever we eat or drink, we swallow air that accumulates in the gut. The gas in our digestive system mainly consists of oxygen and nitrogen. As this gas builds up, the body expels it through burping or passing gas via the anus.

Types of Flatulence:

  • Flatulence with bloating and cramps - Causes abdominal pain.

  • Excessive flatulence - Passing gas more frequently than usual.

  • Smelly flatulence - Gas with a strong odor due to sulfur content.
