Eczema, also known as atopic eczema, is a condition where patches of skin become itchy, inflamed, cracked, rough, or develop blisters. Although more common in children, it can occur at any age. The arms, legs, back, and chest are more prone to eczema. This condition can be uncomfortable, often leading to a strong urge to scratch.

Types of Eczema:

  • Atopic dermatitis.

  • Contact dermatitis.

  • Dyshidrotic eczema.

  • Hand eczema.

  • Neurodermatitis.

  • Nummular eczema.

  • Stasis dermatitis.


  • Each type has different causes. Eczema is a common condition, with a higher risk for individuals who have a personal or family history of eczema, allergies, or asthma.

    Symptoms of Eczema:

  • Skin rashes.

  • Bumps.

  • Fissures.

  • Dryness.

  • Red to brownish patches on the skin.

  • Crusting or oozing.

  • Swelling.

  • Leathery or scaly patches on the skin.

  • Blisters that may weep when they burst.

  • Skin discolouration or pale patches.


  • Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may persist for a long time. If left untreated, the condition can worsen.

    Common Causes of Eczema:

  • Genetics.

  • Food allergies.

  • Environmental factors.

  • Irritants like soaps and detergents.

  • Seasonal allergies.

  • Endocrine disorders.

  • Immune system dysfunction.

  • Skin conditions such as fungal infections and scabies.

  • Cigarette smoke.

  • Certain fabrics, including polyester and wool.

  • Increased body temperature.

  • Upper respiratory tract infections.


  • When to see a doctor

    If itching and redness persist or interfere with daily activities.

    Preventive Measures:

  • Keep your skin moisturized.

  • Avoid sweat accumulation on the skin.

  • Use mild soaps containing glycerin instead of harsh ones.

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes.

  • Wear gloves while washing dishes or doing housework.

  • Avoid fragranced moisturizers or skin creams.

  • Bathe with lukewarm water.


  • Eczema has no definitive cure, but it can be effectively managed with the following tips:

  • Use an oil-based moisturizer or a steroid cream (consult a dermatologist or general practitioner before using any medication).

  • Certain foods, such as dairy and nuts, may trigger eczema symptoms - consider avoiding them.

  • Choose fragrance-free and dye-free soaps.

  • Avoid spices and citrus fruits.
