Peya (Medicated Rice Gruel)

Ingredients :

  • Red rice - 300 gm.

  • Water - 1500 ml.

  • Salt - to taste.

  • Mustard - 1/2 teaspoon.

  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon.

  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 teaspoon.

  • Dry ginger - 1/4 inch piece.

  • Cinnamon - 1/4 inch piece.

  • Cardamom - 1 No.

  • Cloves - 2 No.

  • Coconut milk/milk - 100 ml.

  • Total quantity - 1 litre.


  • How to prepare :

  • Wash and soak rice for 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Meantime, make a powder of roasted mustard, fenugreek & cumin seeds.

  • Boil water in a pressure cooker, add salt, washed rice and grounded powder to it and stir well.

  • Close the cooker lid and cook on medium flame till 4-5 whistles and leave steam naturally.

  • Remove the lid, add coconut milk or milk and serve it hot with any stir fried vegetables and chutney.


  • Benefits :

    Due to low sugar and glycemic content, it is best dietary food for heart patients, diabetics and also people with high blood pressure and obesity.
    Good for gut health and pulmonary functions because of its rich magnesium, iron.


    Contradiction :

    If Coconut milk is not suitable to any person, it can be replaced with milk or water.
