What is jaundice in children?
A substance called "bilirubin" will be developed in the blood and tissues of the body, which leads to jaundice. This excess of bilirubin causes the skin, eyes and mucus membranes in the mouth to turn into yellowish color. The substance bilirubin is processed by liver and may indicate damage to the liver. Jaundice in newborn babies is common as per their blood vessels and liver condition. But in older babies it has to be considered some serious. It is a clue to problems with the liver, infection or other illness.
Causes of jaundice in children
One of the main causes for jaundice is drinking of contaminated water. The contaminated water consists of a virus called Hepatitis A or E. When the Hepatitis virus attacks the liver it can lead to jaundice. The other reason for the jaundice is the liver itself. Liver can be temporarily or permanently damaged by reducing its ability to break down bilirubin (mix it with bile) and move it into the gallbladder. This also causes jaundice.
