What is a headache?

  • Headache is a symptom of various diseases like migraine, tension-headache, cluster-type headache or trigeminal neuralgia, etc.

  • Also, stomach disturbance or gastritis and flatulence cause a headache temporarily.

  • Some headaches occur due to brain lesions, or other major issues of the nerve plexus.


  • Symptoms of Headache

  • Severe pain on the forehead, backward region, below the neck, and sometimes on the face too.

  • Sometimes associated with nausea, and vomiting.

  • Tenderness or pricking pain on either side of head and face.


  • Home Remedies for Headache

  • Grind some Cinnamon sticks into a powder, add some water to make a thick paste. Apply it on the forehead and lie down for 30 minutes.

  • Make a paste of dried Ginger (adrak) with water and apply it to the head before sleeping.

  • Rub Sandalwood (Chandan) in water on a clean surface. Apply the paste on the head. When it is dry apply the next layer of paste to it. Repeat the procedure three to four times. This is especially good for headaches caused by heat.

  • Apply some ghee on the leaf of Castor (arandi) and then keep this leaf on the head.

  • Make a thick paste of Betel leaves (paan) with water and apply this on the head for some time.

  • Take amla powder 5-10 gm with equal ghee and sugar twice a day.

  • When it is a headache due to cold, apply the paste of Black Pepper (kali mirch) on the forehead.

  • Make a paste of holy Basi (tulsi) leaves and apply it on the forehead and leave it for some time.

  • Rub Nutmeg (jayphal) fruit on a clean surface using milk and make a thin paste. Apply it on the forehead.


  • Helpful Tips for Headache

  • Avoid taking heavy or allergic food, which triggers the headache.

  • Avoid taking mid-day sleep, and late-night waking up.

  • Avoid taking so much protein in the diet, as it induces a headache.

  • Take nasya treatment by an Ayurveda physician according to the disease.

  • Take green tea for instant relief of headache, instead of regular tea.

  • Steam inhalation also works in headaches.
