What is dry cough in children?

Children cough when the lining of the windpipe becomes irritated. This often happens when a child is sick or when the body is fighting off an illness and making lots of mucus or phlegm. A dry cough is often caused when the child is suffering from a cold or influenza. This type of cough usually gets worse in a warm room or after the child has gone to bed, but a dry cough may also be an early sign of an infection of the lower respiratory tract, as with bronchitis.

Causes of dry cough in children

  • Due to environmental agents like tobacco smoke, possibly a charcoal or kerosene heaters.

  • Allergy of dust, pollen, and other chemical pollutants cause dry cough.

  • Anatomical conditions like hiatal hernia, benign tumor in or near the airways, etc.

  • Stomach acids and liquids come into the vocal cord and throat, can cause dry cough/ irritative chronic cough.

  • Extremely high quantity and low quantity diet also cause cough.

  • Other conditions like asthma, acid reflux, food allergy can cause dry cough.

  • Digestion is the very most important thing in dry cough, so give attention to it.

  • Inhaled foreign body.

  • Immune deficiency.

  • Ciliary dyskinesia.


  • Symptoms of dry cough in children

  • Dry cough (non-productive) doesn’t produce phlegm or mucus.

  • It is a reflex for clearing airways or an irritative reflex of the epiglottis.

  • Sore throat.

  • Fever.

  • Muscle aches.

  • Headache.

  • Exhaustion.

  • Chills.

  • Dizziness.


  • Home remedies for dry cough in children

  • Mix Turmeric (haldi) powder with a teaspoon of honey and give this three to four times a day to the child.

  • Mix Liquorice (mulethi) powder with Grape juice and Gud (jaggery). Give this mixture to the child.

  • Sucking Licorice (mulethi) root in the mouth is first and effective for dry cough in children.

  • Sugar sipping in the mouth is also effective.

  • Put mint leaves, and basil leaves in honey, and give this mixture to the child to help with dry cough.

  • Jaggery with betel leaves is also effective.

  • Green tea with jaggery or honey, mint leaves, betel leaves, ajwain seed, ginger, and lemon juice is very much useful for dry cough.
