Causes of Stomach Pain in Children

  • Constipation.


  • Weak digestion.


  • Food allergy.


  • Worm infestation.


  • Urinary problem / low intake of water.


  • Wrong eating habits.


  • Change in sleeping patterns.


  • Taking soil.


  • Teeth eruption.


  • Hunger.


  • Milk or other food indigestion.


  • Over exercise of cycling, jumping, or others(muscular pain or tenderness).


  • Medicine for Stomach Pain in Children

  • Place a heating pad or the water bottle on your childís abdomen. Make sure that the heating pad or the water bottle you use is warm and NOT hot. This process is called Warm Compressions. The heat will relax the childís abdomen muscles and provide relief from stomach pain.


  • Take some Ajwain, roast them, and add a pinch of black salt to it. Give this to the child with lukewarm water.


  • Give the child a small bowl of curd or yogurt. Yogurt contains good bacteria which give relief from diarrhoea and cramps that are caused due to bacterial infections.


  • Mix 2 teaspoons each of Aniseed(Saunf), Ajwain, and a little crushed Ginger(adarak) in 1 liter of water. Simmer for 10 minutes, later cool and filter it. Give this solution to the child.


  • Soak Aniseeds in water overnight. The next day filters the solution and gives filtered water to the child.


  • Take 50 ml of warm water and add two teaspoons of lime juice, Mint, and one gram of black salt and give it to the child. Mint helps to fight harmful bacteria, and lemon and black salt are effective in dealing with constipation.


  • Mix some Asafoetida (Hing) powder in water to make a paste and apply it around the childís belly button. Mixing Hing powder with olive oil or ghee and massaging the babyís abdominal area can also provide him with quick relief.


  • Take half a teaspoon of castor oil, warm it slightly. Apply it to the baby's stomach and cover it with betel leaf.


  • Keep your child hydrated. Give them any unsweetened form of tea or liquid.


  • Ginger is very effective in relieving stomach aches that result from overeating. Grate some ginger and let it soak in warm water for some time. Then strain and give it to your child. However, giving ginger to children below the age of 2 is not recommended.


  • Honey is effective in treating stomach problems, because of its antibacterial properties, a good source of carbohydrates, sugars, and antioxidants. It can be given to the child by adding it to herbal teas or warm water. However, it is not recommended for children below the age of 1.


  • Prepare a BRAT diet for your child because it can provide relief from an upset stomach. Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (BRAT) diet can provide your child with much relief if he/she has diarrhoea. This bland diet is perfect for kids when they are sick and want something to eat.


  • Emergency Conditions for Stomach Pain in Children

  • Swallowing metal coin, plastic accessories or soft toys, fabrics, etc.


  • Blunt injuries of abdomen.


  • Swallowing finial, acid or chalk, etc.


  • Swallowing any tablets or syrup in a higher dosage.




  • When to consult a Doctor

  • In stomach pain, accessory symptoms may be diarrhea and vomiting, when it occurred more than four to five times, or having a foul smell and abnormal color or last more than 24 hours you have to consult the physician.


  • When the pain became intense and does not subside by any home remedies or prescribed medicine itís better to go to the hospital.


  • Also when pain localizes in any area of the abdomen.


  • If the history of allergic food intake, also consult the physician.


  • When pain in the lower abdomen and urine frequency changed or come with pus or blood, immediately consult a doctor.


  • Pain associated with fever more than 100.4˚F.


  • Pain occurred with the symptoms - itching around the anus, white patches over the body mainly on the face, itís better to take advice and medicine from the health professional.


  • Any swallowing of fabric, toy or metal accessories, medicine pills, immediately consults the doctor.


  • Some Diet Tips for the 1-5 year Young Babies

  • For Under one year of age babies who canít digest the milk, add half raw nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) in milk and boiled it once, it will help in digestion better and also relax the mind of the baby and induce sleep.


  • Second method-add ľ part of water with milk in a pitcher and boil until only milk remains, it will become lighter than raw milk.


  • To improve digestion take physic nut (Caesalpinia crista) seed, roast it. Itís powder useful to improve the digestion of milk.


  • In the alternative of milk, one should use moong (green gram) thin soup.


  • For the above 3 year children, the Second alternative is soybean milk. Soybean soaked in water 6-8 hours then grind with little water and stain it, then boil it with ľ part of water and soybean milk is ready.


  • If your babies intake soil, they suffered from stomach pain, in this condition take red ochre (geru/gehru, gairik in Sanskrit), strain it with flourís sieve, stir fry with 1/8 part of cowís ghee. Give it with water.


  • When babies having teeth, stomach pain occurs. In this case, one can give a mixture of amalaki churna and pippali. To prepare that mixture adds a half-part tablespoon and 1/8 part tablespoon of pippali.


  • In diarrhea mixture of beal fruit (Aegle marmelous), curd and sugar can be given to the child.
