Tibetan Name : Woo-soo

Hindi Name : Dhaniya, Hara Dhaniya

Part used : Fruits

Taste : Hot, Sweet and Salty

Quality : Light, Coarse, Cool and Oily


Uses of Coriander(Dhaniya):

  • Treats stomach problems, rise of fever associated with badkan, stomach cramps, indigestion, loss of appetite, thirstiness, unriped pimples and especially badkan-mugpo. This helps in the removal of phlegm and reduces fever.
  • It helps to treat poisoning, ophthalmic diseases and long disorders associated with fever.
  • The fresh green leaves are used as a seasoning herb in cooking.
  • The application of pulp of dhaniya on bald areas regularly can cure the problem of baldness.
  • Take dhaniya seeds soaked in water and add 1 teaspoon of dried amla at night and filter it, then take it in the morning to cure baldness.
  • A home remedy to cure Leucorrhoea (thick,whitish or yellowish vaginal discharge), take 10 gms of dhaniya seeds and soak them in 100ml of water over night and drink the water in the early morning. It gives relief in 7 to 8 days in most cases.
  • Some of the acids (linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid) and also vitamin C present in dhaniya will effectively reduces the cholesterol level in the blood and also reduces the deposition along the inner walls of the veins and arteries.
  • Dhaniya helps in stimulating appetite and easy digestion, for this one can consume dhaniya chutney along with rice. This chutney is prepared by mixing dhaniya, black pepper, rock salt and cumin powder.
  • Dhaniya leaves are rich in magnesium, potassium, fiber and antioxidants. Its consumption helps in purification of blood and boosting up immunity. It also helps in removing toxic substance from the body.
  • Dhaniya is useful in diabetics by stimulating the production of insulin, which helps in lowering sugar levels.
  • Paste of dhaniya leaves can be applied on the forehead for fast relief from headache.
  • These leaves are used as home remedy for mouth ulcers as well. Paste of dhaniya leaves is applied on to mouth ulcer 2 to 3 times a day, will get relief from mouth ulcers.
  • For effective treatment of menstrual cramps, one should need to boil a few dhaniya seeds in a cup of water and drink the liquid.
  • Decoction of dhaniya seeds may prove beneficial in cough and urinary infections.
  • Chew the dhaniya seeds to get rid of bad or foul breath.
  • For fevers where patient feels extremely dry through intense heat, a cold infusion of the dhaniya seeds along with sugar may be given.


  • Habitat :

    An annual plant with erect stem, 50cm high. It is a common garden herb. This has been known for thousands of years and is now cultivated in many countries.



    Method of processing :

    The seeds are collected on maturity. After proper drying in sun,these are then stored in a hygienic condition for medical use.
